In terms of a berm house, are there any natural insulators I can put between the dirt and the retaining wall?

Unidentified asked:

I am specifically trying to figure out if there is any junk I could use as insulation between the dirt and the wall of the house (I am in Houston, Texas, so insulation is much better than thermal mass in this ultra hot and humid climate). I don't know much about the insulation of straw bales, but obviously they would decompose too easily. I was thinking about old matresses or something of that nature, but I have no idea and haven't been able to google an answer. Anyone know junk that can be used as insulation in a big space.
As far as I understand thermal mass, if it is 105 in the day and 85 at night, I will get a constant 95 average temperature in my house. This is very typical of Houston summers, so I would prefer to insulate (keep the cold in and the heat out). Otherwise the 95 degrees in the earth and walls will **** out any cooling inside the house (as far as I understand thermal mass). Please let me know if I am off on this.
